The post-frame building system has several key advantages, and these have only improved over time with the evolution of construction technologies and improvements in building components.
Outstanding structural performance of post-frame buildings under adverse conditions, such as hurricanes, is well-documented. Professor German Gurfinkel, in his textbook titled Wood Engineering, cites superior performance of post-frame buildings over conventional construction during Hurricane Camille.Since post-frame buildings are relatively lightweight and benefit from diaphragm action, they efficiently resist wind and seismic forces. Scientific research verified post-frame buildings constructed according to engineered plans generally withstood Hurricane Hugo (wind gusts measured at 109 mph).
Post-frame buildings benefit from the unique properties of diaphragm action. A building diaphragm is a structural assembly comprised of structural sheathing (e.g., plywood or metal cladding) fastened to the framing in such a manner that the entire assembly is capable of transferring in-plane shear forces. These building components work together more efficiently to increase strength and resiliency.
Although the posts in commercial post-frame buildings are typically attached to a concrete slab or masonry wall above grade, in certain applications post-frame buildings use posts embedded deep into the ground. This provides an efficient load path directly to the ground. Building with posts offers greater structural stability with fewer materials and the capacity to build a much higher sidewall than conventional wood-framed construction.
Some people mistakenly think that all post-frame buildings use wooden posts in the ground. This is not the case, especially with commercial post-frame buildings. These are almost always on concrete slabs, poured in place foundations or masonry walls. Concrete columns are also an option. However, treated wood posts can be a long-lasting economical option. Post-frame columns/posts typically use the highest level of chemical treatment available. This provides longevity that is far superior to the treated wood found at most home improvement warehouse

Ohio Department of Transportation Chooses Post Frame
There is big news in the world of post frame: The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is now mandating the use of post frame for all of their buildings. ODOT officials were made aware of the cost benefits of post frame in both construction and maintenance last April, when the National Frame Building Association (NFBA) spoke to them about post frame's energy efficiencies and foundation alternatives (i.e., poured concrete, cast-in-place), among other things. Because post frame is ideal for constructing and maintaining storage and maintenance facilities, including salt garages, it's no surprise cost-conscious state governments are considering such mandates.
